On July 23, 2009, Corporal Nicholas G. Xiarhos was killed in action by an improvised explosive device in Garmsir, Afghanistan during Operation Khanjar. One of the last things he said to his mother was, “Don’t worry about me, I’m living the dream.”

His story came to represent an entire generation of Marines who volunteered to serve during a time of war—and were all living their dream.
